A Portuguese Geocacher

Hi

My name Is João Lopes aka Lopesco and I'm from Portugal.

If everything goes well, I will visit (me and my girlfriend, Cristina) your lovelly country in February.

So, since my last trip (to Cuba), I now ask if we can bring GPS to there, because in the land of Fidel Castro, Gps receivers are forbidden, and our Garmin was held in customs for the time of our vacations.

So, is it legal to carry a Gpsr?

And, for instance, if I stay in Hong Kong, what caches do you recommend?

If you like it, I can bring to Portugal some TBs that you like to move to here. I will carry some portuguese coins and TB's to left there.

I think it is no problem for you to carry GPS to China. There are hundreds of foreign cachers come to China every year. The caches they visited and created in China are the best proof for that.

For caches in Hongkong, I have no idea. You could search in GC. Or maybe you could ask Hansolo, who has just been there.

What kinds of the GPS device are you using? Any special models....

There has not any restriction for you to bring a normal GPS device to Hong Kong. How many days will you stay in Hong Kong? And how many days will you spend for geocaching?

Congratulations! Winner!

No limitation to use GPSr in China. If your GPSr is installed China's map, you may follow that. And attention that the coordinate in Google Earth is offseted hundreds meters.

In Feb, the temperature is quite different between the north and south in geography. The gap may be 30 C degree. So you'd better arrange your gears according to your visting cities. You may get the temperatures info in yahoo.com.

Hi again!

I will visit your lovelly country in the 28 february until 6 march. I will be in Shanghai for 2 days, in the hotel Hotel Best Western New Century Shanghai.

I will try to do the following geocaches:

Inside the Wall

The most magnetic place in china - Since this one is an unknown cache, do I really needed to go to the other coordinates posted in the page of the cache? I really don't have a lot of time...

After Shanghai, I will go to Xi'an for 2 days. I will stay in Hotel Tian Yu Gloria Plaza and I will try to do the Anyuan Gate cache.

After this, another 2 days in Beijing, in the Hotel Plaza Royal Howard Johnson. In here I will try to do the following caches:

Case closed

Tiananmen

After this, back to Lisbon... Does anyone recommends something? How's the weather back there in this period?

I don't know why you chose those 2 caches. For the most magnetic place in China, after the calculation, I think you could get the coordinates.

My suggestion is:(If you don't have much time)

Lovers around(D), Not the bund, Inside the wall, A dix in tin

If you have more time, you could try Lower(D), Lions and Cranes(D), The most magnetic place, It's a bird

(D) means you must go there on daytime.

Thanks for your reply. I've choose that ones because are the nearest to the hotel where we will be. When I say I don't have to much tim e it's because we will be most of the day visiting the area, with a huge group. Since this visits ends at the end of the day, it's when I have time to do some geocaching.

Can someone tell me if the Garmin Colorado is already available in China to be purchased? If so, how much does it cost?

It's a new type of Garmin. Not available in Chian. And always the price of GPS handset in China is much higher than that in the USA. But almost the same as that in Europe.
